Bridgewater Family Dental strives to protect its patients’ teeth from repeated infections and tooth removal through non-surgical root canal procedures. Despite being one of the most common dental procedures performed, with over 15 million root canals performed annually, there are many misconceptions about the nature of a root canal, including what to expect and why they are so crucial to dental health.

A root canal is a type of endodontic treatment, meaning that treatment occurs inside the tooth. A root canal procedure is required when the soft tissue inside the root canal of a tooth – otherwise known as the pulp/nerve – becomes inflamed or infected. This type of deep-set inflammation and tooth decay is often caused by an untreated imperfection in the tooth, like a long-standing cavity, chip, or crack in the tooth.

Some common symptoms of tooth decay that require root canal treatment are increased sensitivity to hot and cold, pain while chewing, swelling, constant throbbing pain and inflamed tender, or discolored gums. Leaving this type of deep decay untreated can lead to the spread of the infection throughout the body and can cause bone loss, loose teeth, and loss of teeth leading to the need for more expensive and extensive dental treatment to replace missing teeth.

“Root canals are a necessary procedure when it comes to preventing future dental procedures,” said Dr. Marwan Bassil, the primary dentist at Bridgewater Family Dental. “Root canals can prevent pain and the need for future dental visits, and is a more affordable alternative to tooth replacement.”

Non-surgical root canal treatment is successful in 95% of cases. This treatment involves an x-ray of the tooth before the procedure – drilling into the tooth, removing the pulp/nerve, and resealing the tooth. A post/build-up and a crown are almost always needed after a root canal. This non-surgical approach can be described as a deeper filling, using a local anesthetic to ensure that the patient does not feel any pain.

A non-surgical root canal procedure can be completed in one visit most of the time and is mostly painless due to the local anesthetic administered to the area. Because of the localized nature of the anesthetic, patients are able to drive home from their procedures and make a largely seamless return to their normal routine and lifestyle.

“There are a lot of misconceptions about root canals,” continued Dr. Bassil, “most people believe that root canals are extremely painful, but local anesthetic allows for a quick and comfortable procedure.”

The cost of a non-surgical root canal varies, depending on which tooth needs a root canal. However, this endodontic procedure is often far cheaper than alternative procedures, such as tooth removal or replacement.
